48 hours in Toronto, Canada

A short, very short visit to Toronto !.

Partially to visit friends from high school days. A visit I seem to make every 4 or 5 few years. We are all a older now, greying, parents, and getting closer to the end of our careers. Our ages are approximately 53-54, and our kids are 25 to 11, and a mix of forever single (artificial insemination), gay (womb for hire), and male-female relationship. These few hours together, sharing our lives and learning of each others lives, sharing the ups and downs of life. I look forward to many more !!.

I digressed.

Other than visiting friends, the short visit gave the opportunity to recharge my wandering spirit, checking out the sights and sounds of a beautiful city.

The Canadian built Canadair Cl-215 Waterbomber. This airplane and the newer version known as Cl-415 ‘Super Scooper’ are currently helping to put out the wild fires in Los Angeles. These planes scoop lake of sea water. In contrast, US airplanes (C-130, DC-10) land at airports to be pumped full with fire retardants. One of the Cl-415 on loan from Quebec flew into a drone, fortunately suffering only wing damage. Amazing the stupidity of that drone operator!. This Cl-215 was photographed in Yellowknife, the guy on the boat obviously enjoying the sight. #waterbomber #cl-215 #canadair

These are my top six. The top six are all women. Through thick and thin - They give me so much joy, guidance, support and strength. Hugs and the words ‘I love you’ can’t be matched by anything else. To these wonderful Women- I send Hugs and the words …. ‘I Love You’.

Roll back to 2016, “Santa” is making Christmas gifts for his children in his shop. Times have changed. The children have grown up to young adults, and the shop is now filled with vintage vehicle parts. No wooden Christmas presents this year. Thirteen days before Christmas in 1951 the de Havilland DHC-3 Otter flew for the first time. Many are still flying, and on several occasions they were used to deliver Santa Claus and presents to remote communities. I painted this Otter in the colours of WARDAIR LTD, as the actual airplane was based a few 100 meters from my house. It is painted banking over a northern landscape. #watercolors #dhc3 #wardaircanada

Yup Thats Me You’Re Probably Wondering How I Got Into This Situation….because they are old or cold- the hydraulic supports holding up the hood spontaneously failed and pinned my hands under the hood. Yes. It hurt, and a few words were heard around the neighborhood. Lucky not trapped, my fingers could still open the hood release under the hood. Obviously, I am not going to be painting tonight. The sketch is crude enough to show the story. #outch #funnynotfunny

Ice - what comes to your mind?. Something to cool the drinks, we skate on it, and slide our vehicles on it. There are a lot of people studying how ice forms on lakes. Each year the structure of the ice is different - affected by seasonal temperature variations. Each lake has its own unique variables including water temperature and lake depth. I’ve been photographing the ice on seven lakes near Yellowknife during the past three weeks. During that time, temperatures have dropped to -25C and 15cm of snow, and freezing rain. By now, most lakes are frozen (12-15cm thick ice) with a layer of snow, other lakes are mostly open water. The transition from open water to ice are photographically interesting and tell the story on how the ice formed.

Flying back to Yellowknife. Seemed like a perfect clear sky day for helicopter aerial photography. Cruising at 1000 feet above the ground. But all that changed when we flew north - directly into low clouds and freezing rain. Within a few minutes ice had formed on the windows, and the pilot headed for home. #northernweather #aerialphotography #yellowknife

On the 11th hour of the 11th month we stop to give Thanks and Remember those Brave Men and Women that Served in the Armed Forces and gave us the Life that we have Today. Canadians served in the First and Second World Wars, Korea, Cyprus, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan. Most came home, and many did not. Take a moment in silence to think about them -

A story of two model airplanes. They are both 1/48 scale models of de havilland DHC-3 Otter, and both of the same airplane (s/n # 69) at different stages in its life. Registered as CF-CZP it flew for Canadian Pacific Airlines (1955 - White model), Pacific Western Airlines (1959), Northward Aviation (1965), Carter Service (1973), Raecom Air (1980), Air Tindi (1988 - Yellow model). I flew in this airplane in 1988. This nearly 70 year old airplane is still flying in Sioux Lookout.
Yesterday, the white model had its one and only flight - to the floor. Although it looks quite broken, similar to the real plane, which has had several crashes, it will also be rebuilt. #aviation #bushplanes #dhc3otter

Uranium was mined here during the 1950’s - early 1980’s and sold to the US government, and for use in Canadian designed CANDU nuclear reactors. Since the mine closed most of what was a busy town is now abandoned, smashed or salvaged. Pictures of Uranium City on social media only include houses in the abandoned part of town; houses that have collapsed or have been stripped of usable materials - the empty hulks of a formerly lively house. I also photographed these houses, it is an unusual sight and photographically interesting.

But - what houses do the 70 habitants of Uranium City live in ?. These photos are a cross section of those houses, some resemble those in a typical Canadian town; vegetable gardens, potted flowers, trimmed grass, neatly stacked firewood, motor boats and trailers in the driveway. #uraniumcity #saskatchewan #uraniumcitysaskatchewan

Grad 1981. They were the last graduates of the CANDU High School, in Uranium City. The CANDU high school, open in 1979 and named the “best equipped high school “ in Northern Canada. On December 3rd, 1981 Eldorado Nuclear announced it would close the 30-year old mine and mill on June 30, 1982. Businesses closed and the population left. From a pre-closure population of 2,507 in 1981 to less than 800 in 1983. The CANDU school was closed and abandoned in 1983 with less than one-tenth of the students remaining. In 1982 the grade 10 class created a booklet The history of Uranium City and District - “With the closing of the last operating mine in the area Uranium City faced the imminent danger of becoming a ghost town “. The term “ghost town “ is still being used to describe Uranium City. Uranium City treasure. Door from a Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited (EM&R) truck. Due to the importance of Uranium during World War 2, the Canadian Government nationalized Eldorado to supply the United States military with uranium products. This truck probably worked at the Beaverlodge Mine (Eldorado Mine) uranium mine in the community of Eldorado, approximately 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) east of Uranium City, Saskatchewan. Beaverlodge Mine opened in 1953 and closed in 1982. Any know the make and model year of this truck?. #uraniumcity #uraniumcitysaskatchewan #uranium #mining
