Ice road season in Uranium City. The time of year that the local population can drive to the rest of Saskatchewan, and semi trucks deliver fuel and supplies on the ice road on Lake Athabasca. These are Sentinel 1 satellite images dated March 11, 2025. Black areas are clear ice, white areas are cracks and grey areas represent areas with overflow. #uraniumcity #iceroad #iceroadtruckers

Screen shots of the LCD panel certainly don’t do justice to the stunning beauty of frozen Lake Athabaska. The Uranium City - Fond-du-Lac ice road is the only road to Uranium City. Fuel trucks are expected any day to refill the nearly empty gas and diesel tanks in town. #uraniumcity #iceroad

Road Trip. La Ronge to Uranium City. Unpaved snow covered roads, ice roads, freezing rain, washboard, snow storms, CB radio calls “120km northbound two two wheelers”, abandoned vehicles along the road- towing fees are not worth the cost. Hours of driving between anything. Passing through forested areas and wildfire burnt areas, the road curves around lakes and up and over ancient glacial hills. Temperatures between 0C and -25C. Audio books, gas station coffee and conversation. White knuckle driving at times when the truck back wheels seemed to want to get in front of the truck. A few more chips in the windshield. Passed a sunk grader, and road crews flooding the ice road. An amazing drive through the beauty of northern Saskatchewan. Slept for 12 hours when we arrived.

Mixed Media Monday!. Roll back the clock to August 2023. The entire population of Yellowknife was given 48 hours to evacuate due to the threat of advancing Wildfires. We packed up our 1991 FJ80 Landcruiser and hit the road. Like most other drivers, we brought additional fuel in jerrycans. We returned several weeks later to a town that was not damaged. My girlfriend, RamblingBern made this absolutely stunning mixed fibre art representing our departure. #yellowknife #fibreartist #landcruiser #evacuation #wildfire

The Canadian built Canadair Cl-215 Waterbomber. This airplane and the newer version known as Cl-415 ‘Super Scooper’ are currently helping to put out the wild fires in Los Angeles. These planes scoop lake of sea water. In contrast, US airplanes (C-130, DC-10) land at airports to be pumped full with fire retardants. One of the Cl-415 on loan from Quebec flew into a drone, fortunately suffering only wing damage. Amazing the stupidity of that drone operator!. This Cl-215 was photographed in Yellowknife, the guy on the boat obviously enjoying the sight. #waterbomber #cl-215 #canadair

The children have grown up to young adults, and the shop is now filled with vintage vehicle parts. No wooden Christmas presents this year. Thirteen days before Christmas in 1951 the de Havilland DHC-3 Otter flew for the first time. Many are still flying, and on several occasions they were used to deliver Santa Claus and presents to remote communities. I painted this Otter in the colours of WARDAIR LTD, as the actual airplane was based a few 100 meters from my house. Yup Thats Me You’Re Probably Wondering How I Got Into This Situation….because they are old or cold- the hydraulic supports holding up the hood spontaneously failed and pinned my hands under the hood. Yes. It hurt, and a few words were heard around the neighborhood. Lucky not trapped, my fingers could still open the hood release under the hood. Obviously, I am not going to be painting tonight. The sketch is crude enough to show the story. #outch #funnynotfunny
